Even Gandalf wasn't sure he didn't actually know until the events of the Fellowship of the Ring in the LoTR "trilogy" when he tossed the ring into Bilbo's fireplace. The thing is, regarding the timeline of the books, they didn't know much at all about the ring. i'm not even getting started on the Azog fight. then the ring, which although i'm pretty sure the situation is the same in the book, with the ring just being passed off as a ring with magical abilities, i felt as though they should of tried to link it in with sauron more. i feel like they completely just flicked off smaug like a annoying fly, it felt like he got no where near the amount of screen time he should of, it would of been amazing to be honest.
also, off topic, and spoiler alert, so dont look at this if you have not seen the film yet/ read the book, i wish they had done more on smaug and the ring. The ring does connect The Hobbit with the Lord of the Rings, and does provide the motivation in LotR, but it could easily be replaced by any other object Sauron wants, so is kinda incidental there as well.
